  • Gaining experience to use on your CV, particularly for those interested in a career in the heritage sector.
  • The opportunity to put existing skills into practice and building new skills.
  • Reimbursement for travel expenses.
  • Contributing to the day-to-day operations of the David Livingstone Birthplace.

Registration Process

The volunteer registration process involves a registration form, having an informal chat with the Volunteer and Skills Development Officer and successfully providing two references (these can be character, school, work, volunteering). After completing these steps, all new volunteers must complete an induction session.

Training

All new volunteers will receive basic training relevant to the role that they will be undertaking. There may also be an opportunity to shadow staff and/or existing volunteers. In addition, there is ongoing training for all David Livingstone Birthplace team members throughout the year.

Operational training is required for volunteers (and staff) to operate on site successfully. It will ensure that all volunteers are fully equipped to achieve the aims of their roles, as well as uphold health and safety standards.

There are also core training sessions that we ask all volunteers to attend. The core training sessions will include Equality, Diversity and Inclusion sessions and Safeguarding Children training.

We are very grateful to our key funders the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and the Scottish Government for their support in helping us deliver the Birthplace Project.
