Next Step Initiative Trainee

I am Lara, and I want to share my experience at the David Livingstone Trust with you. I am a trainee with the Next Step Initiative Ethnic Minority Career, Museum & Built Environment Heritage Programme 2019.

Luckily for me, I was chosen to be one of the 16 African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities trainees to benefit from the programme, which focuses only on enhancing much in demand cultural heritage sector skills.

The traineeship runs for twelve months, which started on 8 April 2019 with a bursary funded trainee experience. It combines work-based placement and site training placement at David Livingstone Birthplace.

Being with the David Livingstone Trust is a huge privilege for me to gain a depth of knowledge about David Livingstone as a Scottish physician, Congregationalist and pioneer Christian missionary with the London Missionary Society, an explorer in Africa, and one of the most popular British heroes of the late 19th-century Victorian era.

His fame as an explorer in Africa gave me some inspiration to work on a project about David Livingstone’s use of medicine in the Zambezi and Nile expeditions.

The three months journey is one of the best and most interesting projects to be involved in. Working in a small team provides an opportunity to learn and to build transferable skills. All these provide me with understanding and practical experience of the specialist skills needed within the cultural Heritage sector across Scotland. Every day new things where been thought and I always look forward to add my own value and contribution to the centre.
