Meet the Team: Sandy Marshall

My name is Sandy Marshall and I am the Volunteer Coordinator at David Livingstone Birthplace (DLB). My role is to create a culture of volunteering to support and develop the visitor experience of the DLB when it reopens in 2020. This is an exciting time to join the existing Birthplace team, and we are looking for new volunteers who are enthusiastic about history, museums, social media, gardening and the outdoors. No experience required!

The David Livingstone Trust is undergoing an exciting re-development funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and the Scottish Government. This will involve improvements to the existing museum buildings and gardens which will facilitate more of the collections to be on show for visitors to enjoy. There will also be a shop and café to enhance the experience.

The collection is an incredible vehicle to discuss different social issues and themes important to Scotland including history, science, theology, and contemporary politics. The DLB collection can and will reflect contemporary society as it continually evolves, rather than solely reflect past achievements.

One of my main goals as part of the DLB project team is to promote community engagement to facilitate volunteers from different communities to get involved. Volunteering is important and has a positive impact that makes a difference. The David Livingstone Trust aims to have a reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationship with our volunteers; with their involvement informing and developing our work, and our work enabling individuals to try something new, meet new people, learn skills and achieve personal development through their volunteering.

If you have any questions or need further information then please get in touch at volunteer@dltrust.uk or register your interest here .
